Our curriculum is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the statutory framework for children from birth to five years in England. It sets the standards that early-years providers follow to support every child’s learning, development, health and wellbeing.
The EYFS recognises that every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Young children learn most effectively through warm relationships, purposeful play, first-hand experiences and opportunities to explore the world around them. At Inn Farm, we combine child-led play with carefully planned adult-guided activities, responding to each child’s interests, needs and stage of development.
Children’s learning is supported across seven interconnected areas:
The three prime areas
Communication and Language
Physical Development
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
These areas provide an essential foundation for children’s wellbeing and future learning.
The four specific areas
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design
The areas are explored together through everyday play and meaningful experiences. A countryside walk, for example, might encourage new vocabulary, physical confidence, counting, curiosity about nature and creative expression—all within one enjoyable activity.
Play is central to our approach. Through play, children can investigate, make choices, solve problems, test ideas and develop their imagination. Our experienced practitioners create a stimulating environment in which children feel safe, valued and confident enough to try new things.
Practitioners observe and interact with the children, recognising their individual efforts, interests and achievements. These observations help us plan appropriate next steps and provide experiences that extend each child’s learning without placing unnecessary pressure on them.
Parents and carers know their children best, which is why a strong partnership between home and nursery is so important. We share information about children’s experiences and progress, listen to families and work together to support each child consistently.
The EYFS gives parents confidence that early-years providers work towards the same statutory standards and guiding principles. Every setting brings these principles to life in its own way; at Inn Farm, we do so through caring relationships, purposeful play and the unique learning opportunities offered by our countryside environment.
Our aim is to nurture happy, curious and confident children who enjoy learning, develop independence and are well prepared for the next stage of their journey.
